Mazarron accuses Regional Government of depriving them of 45,000 euros meant for its Phoenician boats
A local councillor has claimed that money destined for the municipality’s archaeological project has been siphoned off by those up above

The Councillor for Culture and Historical Heritage of Mazarrón, Jorge Durán (pictured), has railed against the Regional Government of Fernando López Miras for “removing a grant of 45,000 euros to our municipality that were intended to update the archaeological documentation of the Phoenician shipwreck Mazarrón II”.
Mazarrón II is the wreck of a ship dating back to the Phoenician period that is currently lying on the seabed off the coast of Mazarrón and which is the subject of a massive project to move it to a museum for the purposes of conservation.
However, a sum of 44,397.35 euros that was supposed to be allotted to the project for “archaeological work in Mazarrón” seems instead to have been spent on building and improving a Congress Centre, according to Councillor Durán.
“This the importance that the Regional Government gives to our municipality, which is null and void, and also highlights the little interest it has in the Phoenician ship,” said the Councillor.
A few days ago, Mazarrón Mayor Ginés Campillo asked for a meeting with the Minister and the Councillor of Culture to “sit down to talk and start working together so that the Phoenician ship stays in Mazarrón, and until today we have not got any answer. I ask again for that meeting which is vital for the economic and touristic future of our municipality.”
