On Friday May 17, the Alicante town of Alfaz del Pi will once again celebrate Norwegian National Day, marking the 54th consecutive year of honouring Norway's first constitution signed in 1814.
As the host to the second largest Norwegian population globally, with more than 2,500 officially registered individuals and an estimated actual population of 8,000 residing within the municipality, Alfaz always embraces this annual occasion enthusiastically.
This festive day appeals to everyone, but none more so than children. Hundreds gather in traditional attire, adorned in vibrantly coloured regional garments known as ‘bunads’, representing various regions across Norway. Joyous parades, energetic folk dancing, spirited marches and live music create an electrifying atmosphere.
Preparations commence each year in February when the Organising Committee for the event collaborates closely with the local government. Approximately 2,000 participants join the grand parade along the town's primary streets, after the hoisting of the flags in all the Norwegian institutions of the municipality and with a campaign mass in the Plaza Mayor.
An official ceremony will be held at the Casa de Cultura at 11.30am, before transitioning to a fun-filled afternoon of activities tailored for youngsters at the Municipal Sports Centre.
The influence of Alfaz del Pi’s thriving Norwegian community can be seen throughout the town, which is now home to two schools. A historic club boasting more than 50 years and more than 1,000 members exists alongside a Norwegian retirement facility, a locally based church, and even Spain’s sole foreign branch of the Norwegian Volunteer Centre - Frivill. Additionally, numerous Nordic stores and businesses form part of this culturally diverse landscape.
Alfaz del Pi has been commemorating Norway’s National Day for more than five decades, a celebration that has become a unique day of coexistence between both cultures.
