ARCHIVED - March 25 and 26 Popular culture and traditions festival in El Beal

Guided tours of the Cueva Victoria and the old mines the area are among the highlights of the weekend in the Cartagena countryside

The Universidad Popular of Cartagena is holding a Popular Traditions event in the area of El Beal over the weekend of March 25 and 26, highlighting some of the customs of El Estrecho, El Beal and El Llano del Beal.

Activities will include esparto grass weaving and bobbin lace making, traditional music, flamenco dance and a wide range of games including “caliche”.

In addition there are to be guided tours to the Cueva Victoria, which is a treasure trove for paleontologists, and to the old mines of Las Matildes and La Mina Blanca, organized by the Fundación Sierra Minera to give information about the mineral wealth of the area, This has attracted settlers since the beginning of recorded history, and the resources of the Sierra Minera were one of the reasons for Cartagena becoming such an important Roman city.

The residents themselves are also taking part, organizing a historical-photographic walk for visitors, and on Saturday March 25 there will be a “Feria de las Tradiciones” at the fairground of El Llano.
