March 21 to 30 Salted seafood gastronomy festival in Aguilas

A special guided tour with tastings included takes place on Saturday March 22

The town of Águilas on the south-western coast of the Region of Murcia has a very busy schedule of gastronomic events throughout the year, and from March 21 to 30 it’s the turn of the local salted fish products to take centre stage in the second edition of the “Ruta de Salazones”.

Throughout the 10 days between 25 and 30 local bars and restaurants are offering their own salazón-based specialities, including the popular “marinera” tapa snacks, octopus salad with “hueva”, full Águilas tomatoes with cured tuna, canapés with tasty treats and many more.

One of the highlights of the event is a guided tour on Saturday March 22, during which participants will have an opportunity to taste some of the culinary creations featured as well as learning about the long history of salted fish production in the area, which dates back at least as far as Roman times (as evidenced by the production facilities discovered by archaeologists on the Isla del Fraile).

The tour also includes the seafront of the fishing port and the historical exhibition in the local archaeological museum, and at the end of the visit top chef José Rodríguez (“El Poli”) will lead a tasting of the products concerned.
