Malaga will switch beach showers back on this month
Full water flow will be restored on all Malaga strands on June 15
Andalucia has been one of the areas hardest hit by devastating long-term drought and a distinct lack of rainfall during the first half of the year in Malaga forced the authorities to draw up a third drought decree in April.
Among several measures, the water supply to showers on all of the city’s beaches was cut, and only foot baths have remained in operation.
May and June have presented a different picture, with widespread and often heavy rain bringing some relief to Malaga, and the City Council has decided to restart the beach showers on Thursday June 15.
Teresa Porras, Councillor for Operational Services, Interior Regime, Beaches and Festivals has warned though that the restriction could be reintroduced at any point of the summer if the drought worsens.
The seriousness of the situation has led the regional government to implement several other measures aimed at saving water that can be used for human consumption. In Malaga, residents are prohibited from washing their cars in certain areas or filling their swimming pools, while street cleaning has been limited and the watering of gardens and parks has been temporarily suspended.
Unfortunately, water shortages are nothing new in Andalucia and last year, both the showers and foot baths were switched off at beaches in Algarrobo, Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga.
But if last summer has anything to teach us, it’s that the worst is still to come, with Malaga likely to swelter in several high-season heatwaves that will drain the reservoirs dry. Regional president Juanma Moreno has already hinted at possible restrictions come September, but he hasn’t hit the panic button quite yet.
"Let's hope it rains so as not to take painful measures" for the population as a whole,” he said.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the government has invested 120 million euros in drought relief measures, 40% of which will be used to develop more tertiary treatment plants that will recycle water to irrigate crops.
