A propane gas explosion destroyed the interior of a restaurant on Plaza de Gabriel Miró in the heart of Alicante city in the early hours on Monday morning, February 28. It is not yet known how the explosion originated but even though the building was empty at the time, official sources are amazed that nobody on the street was injured given the strength of the blast.

The Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue Service of Alicante (SPEIS) were alerted at around 5am and two fire departments of eight troops, as well as three Local Police patrols, rushed to the scene. Upon their arrival, the security forces confirmed that there had been an explosion of “great magnitude”, the force of which had blown off doors, windows and much of the front facade of the building.

Fearing a possible gas leak, firefighters worked quickly to establish a security perimeter around the site and cut off the energy supply to the restaurant. It was thought that the explosion likely originated in the kitchen given the large number of propane cylinders located there.

After the scene was secured, officers proceeded to clean the square or rubble and glass, which had been blasted up to 20 metres around the site of the explosion.

Officers are investigating the cause of the explosion.
