Lorca opens first section of the new Central Ring Road
The stretch will allow drivers travel from one end of Lorca to the other without passing through the city centre
The first section of the Central Ring Road in Lorca was officially opened on Wednesday November 8, a strategic development that will decongest the city centre of some 7,000 vehicles every day.
This new road connects the N-340 highway in the Apolonia neighborhood with the San Diego roundabout, allowing drivers to travel from one end of the city to the other without hitting the urban centre. It should drastically improve traffic flow and ease congestion, particularly along avenues Europa and Juan Carlos I.
The dual carriageway has two lanes and level crossings at each of its five roundabouts, in addition to ample walking and bicycle lanes and LED lighting designed to reduce CO2 emissions.

With an investment from the regional government of 5.6 million euros, the most unique feature of the Central Ring Road is the 170 metres of tunnels that will allow cars to pass under the new AVE high-speed train line to Almeria. Vehicles will enter the tunnels via access ramps that feature reinforced concrete side walls to ensure safety.
The construction of the ring road represents the single largest investment in Lorca infrastructure and will cost a total of 25 million euros by the time it’s completed. Overall, the project will stretch for 4.4 kilometres, running from the old N-340 highway in the east of the city to the RM-11 in the west.
“This investment represents the commitment of the local and regional Administration to improving the quality of life of citizens and the growth of the city, marking an important moment in the history of Lorca, and representing another step in the transformation and the development of the city towards a more modern and better connected Lorca,” concluded Lorca mayor, Fulgencio Gil Jódar.
