The Spanish railway infrastructure manager and administrator, Adif, has assured that Cercanías commuter trains will return to
Lorca by mid-2026.
“This is the date that Adif has given us for its implementation,” said the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil Jódar, after a meeting held this week with Adif officials about the arrival of the AVE high-speed trains in Lorca.
The Mayor continued, “It has been a very important and fruitful meeting, where they have explained to us how the execution of the project is coming along. It must be taken into account that it is the most important work carried out in our municipality in recent decades. We are investing 328 million euros to change the appearance and communications of the city.”
He went on to say that the reestablishment of the Cercanías in Lorca has been greatly in demand, and that the local government team has insisted on its return.
Cercanías is the urban commuter rail system in Spanish cities, like a light overground rail service.
In the next few days, the Lorca Railway Board will convene to discuss specific information on the different sections of railway to be reopened.
This is in addition to the high-speed railway line that is being built to connect Lorca and Almería to bring the AVE to both cities.
