ARCHIVED - Lorca Castle road set to reopen after landslide and sinkhole closure
The access road to the castle in the Region of Murcia could be opened in the next few days
Three months after its closure following a landslide brought about by heavy rains, the road to Lorca Castle is set to reopen to traffic within the next few days.
The access road to the castle runs through the San José neighbourhood from Santa Maria to the Allcazaba, but was closed in May after a sinkhole appeared the size of the entire road itself.
Repair work has consisted mainly of removing all the material that had become loose as a result of the landslide, explained Lorca Mayor, Diego José Mateos, who visited the site on Wednesday to check on the prgress being made.
The road has been reconstructed using granular material, rockfill and gravel cement to consolidate one of the access roads to the castle and the Parador de Turismo, and the road surface is also being repaired with agglomerate ahead of its reopening "in the next few days", added the mayor.
To prevent further landslides, triple torsion mesh which was used to contain possible slippages will be repositioned with a concrete gunite to give it more resistance, "once the work to consolidate the slope has been completed".
The proximity to and impact on the A-7 motorway meant that work on the castle road had to be carried out in coordination with the State Roads Department in Murcia, and during working hours, the lane of the carriageway in the direction of Murcia was cut off, just before the entrance under the slope of the Castle.
The repairs were considered "urgent" because the loose landslide debris was suspended on the hillside, held in place by the triple torsion mesh, and there was a danger of it falling onto the A-7 motorway.
So a detailed technical study was carried out to find the "best solution", and according to the mayor, the deadlines and conditions imposed by the State Roads in Murcia have been met.
