ARCHIVED - Long-standing Katy restaurant in Cabo de Palos finally gets demolition papers
The old Cartagena eatery has been standing empty for four years and is now considered a “ruin”

Four years after it closed its doors, the demolition work of the old Katy restaurant in Cabo de Palos has finally begun. The building has been in a state of serious disrepair for some time now and in June 2022, the Town Planning Department imposed a demolition order due to the “imminent ruin situation and the risk posed to passers-by”.
The owners of the Katy premises were given 48 hours to respond but they have decided against opposing the move, and Costas has finally come on board and authorised the tear down.
The project suffered numerous delays, firstly through the difficulty of locating all of the original owners of the property and secondly, because several local residents threatened to appeal the demolition decree.
And in order to progress, the permission of Costas was needed, since the Katy restaurant is built on land in the maritime public domain. Now that this has been granted, the owners of the building have begun clearing rubble and cleaning up the plot.
"Finally, the authorities are demolishing the structure of the old Katy restaurant in Cabo de Palos, which was undoubtedly in a dilapidated situation, as the City Council stated last year. We understand that it is good news for Cabo de Palos, based on the safety of the neighbours, but also because of the bad image that this dilapidated structure gave off in a place with so much traffic", the deputy mayor and Town Planning councillor, Ana Belén Castejón, said this week.
Katy closed its doors to customers in November 2019 after a six-decade battle between the owners, the Trillo Figueroa family, and the people who had been running the restaurant.
However, nothing was done to maintain the building and within a couple of years it had fallen into an advanced state of deterioration. An inspection by Urban Planning found that the premises posed a serious risk as several of the interior and exterior beams had come loose, and a follow-up last May by Cartagena City Council verified that Katy would have to come down.
