LED headlights are now legal in Spain: Everything you need to know about making the switch

The world of motoring in Spain is constantly changing and a recent update to the law will come as terrific news for drivers, especially those who own older vehicles. Motorists are now allowed to upgrade their halogen headlights with LED bulbs, which vastly improve illumination and provide clearer vision at night.

Why has the law been changed?
While LED bulbs have always been legal in Spain in theory, they had to fall under UN Regulation No. 37, designed for incandescent lights. In practice, this meant that it was very difficult for drivers to source the correct lights without spending a fortune.
Now, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism has updated the law so that headlights can be replaced with those LED bulbs that are already legal in any Member State of the European Economic Area.
This correction stipulates that the replacement of original headlamps with approved LED lamps will not be considered a reform, as long as an equivalent replacement certificate (ECE) is available.
However, not just any LED light will do for a car, as the current regulations state that if the light intensity exceeds 2,000 lumens, the car must be equipped with an automatic correction system for the height of the lamp, as well as a headlight washing system.

He moved to Spain after leaving P&G and worked in a Spanish garage for 3 years before setting up on his own.
