ARCHIVED - Largest cruise liner in the world returns to Cartagena port this month
More than 26 ships carrying 35,000 passengers will dock in the Region of Murcia city port this November
Cartagena Port is cruising into what is shaping up to be a bumper month in terms of stopovers with more than 35,000 passengers scheduled to disembark from 26 liners in November, including the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.
"November will be one of the most outstanding months in terms of the number of passengers; a daily average of more than 1,000 people will arrive in Cartagena, to the benefit of our museums, shops and hotels," said Cartagena Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, adding that "the autumn season really is the high season for cruise tourism, mainly due to the warm temperatures."
Oceania's Riviera and Norwegian Cruise's Norwegian Star are the first passenger ships to arrive at Cartagena port this week, two of five liners to dock on the same day, launching what the Port Authority has confirmed will be the third best month of 2022.
Port Authority President, Yolanda Muñoz, said that "having five cruise ships on the same day is a real success for Cartagena and its port, which has demonstrated its capacity to host important operations and consolidate itself as an attractive destination for the shipping companies that return month after month."
"Cartagena is a great Mediterranean city, which is why shipping companies keep coming back and why the port attracts new ones," she added.
This month will see the arrival of three cruise ships for the first time: Norwegian Dawn; Azamaran Onward; and MSC Seaview.
There will be a double stopover on November 25, and two triple stopovers on November 2 and 7, when the Wonder of the Seas will return to Cartagena as part of a tour of the Mediterranean.
The biggest cruise ship in the world is 363 metres long and 64 metres wide, and weighs in at a whopping 236,857 tons.
