La Manga Estacio bridge breaks down again
There were mile-long traffic jams in La Manga this Sunday when the Puente Estacio failed to close
The Puente del Estacio drawbridge in La Manga del Mar Menor suffered a breakdown this Sunday August 13 while trying to close, creating a backlog of traffic that was unable to cross the bridge.
Normally, La Manga’s Estacio bridge opens every two hours to allow boats that are over 7 metres tall to pass through, and then closes again for cars and pedestrians to be able to cross, but this weekend the mechanism became stuck.
The incident occurred at around 6pm this Sunday when a mechanical failure in the northern part of the bridge prevented it from closing fully.
For more than an hour and a half, cars were trapped at kilometre 14 of La Manga and soon there was a traffic jam going back for miles in both directions.
Municipal workers on jet skis and in a speedboat were sent to the site to lower the bridge manually, which they managed to do at around 7.40pm.
This is not the first time the Estacio drawbridge has broken down; it suffers frequent breakdowns every summer, either because the opening mechanism breaks and prevents the navigation of boats over 7 metres high or, as in this case, when the closing mechanism breaks. The maintenance of the bridge costs 116,651.62 euros per year.
