La Concepción reservoir triples its reserves from a year ago after the latest rains in Málaga
Recent rainfall boosts water reserves in Málaga, but drought concerns remain
Last year’s drought severely impacted Málaga’s water reserves and agriculture, but recent rainfall at the start of 2025 has finally provided some much-needed relief. The wet weather, arriving in late January and continuing into early February, has led to a significant improvement in reservoir levels and has been a lifeline for local farmers.The most notable increase has been at La Concepción reservoir, which has tripled its reserves, now holding over 44 cubic hectometres of water. Other reservoirs have also benefited, including La Viñuela, Malaga’s largest, which has more than doubled since December, reaching over 18 cubic hectometres compared to the barely nine recorded at the end of last year.
For local farmers, the rain has come just in time. Crops such as avocados and citrus fruits had been struggling with dry soil conditions, and the recent rainfall has helped replenish moisture levels. However, while this has improved the short-term outlook, experts warn that the problem is far from solved.
“It is falling in line with the parameters of a normal year, but there is a great shortage. The issue is far from resolved,” says the general secretary of COAG (Coordinator of Farmers’ and Livestock Owners’ Organisations).
The positive impact of this rain is even more significant considering the strict water restrictions imposed in October 2024, when authorities were forced to limit supply across the Costa del Sol. These restrictions were eased slightly in December following earlier heavy rainfall, but concerns over long-term water security remain.
Officials continue to urge residents and businesses to be mindful of their water usage, as climate patterns suggest drier winters will become more common. While this recent rainfall has brought much-needed relief, sustainable water management remains a priority for the region.
