June 9-18 Torrevieja Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival with music and procession

Torrevieja's annual Sagrado Corazón de Jesus (Sacred Heart of Jesus) Festival gets underway on Friday June 9, and will fill the streets with colour and music until June 18 in this, its jubilee year.

The 10-day traditional religious celebration offers something for everyone, including processions, concerts, traditional dances such as cabezudos (dancers wearing large heads), flamenco as well as gastronomy.

The festivities will be held in the Plaza de la Ermita del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and Plaza de Oriente. Admission is free.

Here are some of the highlights:

Saturday June 10, 8.30pm: Coronation of the Fiesta Queens in the Auditorio del Centre Cultural Virgen del Carmen.

Thursday June 15, 8.15pm: Children's entertainment and a raffle in Plaza de Oriente.

Friday June 16, 8.30pm onwards: Live music, DJ and dance performances in Plaza de Oriente.

Saturday June 17: A giant paella will be served in Plaza de Oriente, followed by a large raffle at 9.30pm and orchestral music at 11pm.

Sunday June 18, 9pm: Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary procession from the parish church through the following streets: Zoa, Concordia del Mar, Ramon y Cajal y Zoa. As the procession passes along the Paseo Maritimo Juan Aparicio, a firework display will be set off.
