The Isaac Peral submarine, an innovative vehicle designed in the 19th century, is one of the main historical attractions in Spain’s Cartagena, housed in the city’s Naval museum.
Now that heritage is about to become even more special as the original mural that accompanied the submarine is being proudly displayed alongside it, after spending 20 years locked up in a municipal warehouse.
As of this Thursday, April 13, Cartagena is unveiling the fully restored ceramic artwork in the courtyard leading to the Isaac Peral Hall of the Naval Museum.
The mosaic was created by painters Enrique Gabriel Navarro and Ramón Alonso Luzzy, and for a time accompanied the submarine in its original location, under the gardens of the Military Government in 1965.

Since the turn of the century they have been kept under lock and key, and the submarine itself moved to a safer location in the museum, where it can be better preserved.
The tiles of the mural were restored more than 15 years ago by Enrique Navarro, son of one of the original artists, and have been kept in the municipal art gallery ever since… until today.
According to Cartagena City Council, this restoration is a step forward in protecting the heritage surrounding the history of Cartagena.
The mural, which will be permanently installed in its new location, is made up of a total of 462 tiles of about 14 centimetres each, hand-painted and fired.
It is a composition of two blocks on the sides and one in the centre, which show a scene depicting the navy, both ancient and modern. Originally, the panel also contained a central mosaic depicting the tower of the coat of arms of Cartagena, which unfortunately has not been recovered.
The ownership of the mural belongs to the Port of Cartagena, which has paid for the installation in this new location.
The City Council is also continuing with the project to open the museum house of Isaac Peral, which should be available to visit by the end of 2023.
