ARCHIVED - Hundreds of animals rescued from dire conditions in illegal Murcia puppy farm
The corpses of 46 animals were discovered in a fridge on the Molina de Segura farm
A 48-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman have been arrested and jailed for allegedly running an illegal puppy farm in the Murcia municipality of Molina de Segura.
In addition to holding hundreds of sick and injured animals in cramped and filthy conditions, the pair is accused of hiring undocumented workers and forcing them to work around the clock under threat of deportation.
During the course of the investigation, officers found 265 dogs and 41 cats living in tiny, cramped cages, and the bodies of another 46 animals were discovered in a refrigerated storage unit on the property. Various medications of dubious origin and 3,000 euros in cash were also seized.
Sources from the National Police maintain that the perpetrators recruited irregular migrants to work in the kennel, paying them just 400 euros per month for 16-hour shifts.
They also subjected the workers to continuous humiliation and harassment and routinely threatened to report them to the authorities.
The suspects have been remanded in custody accused of crimes of animal abuse, human trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation, supporting illegal immigration, electricity fraud and document falsification.
