ARCHIVED - Human chain protest in the Mar Menor: Saturday August 13
Groups from all over Spain and Europe are expected to take part in the demonstration
The movement of the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) for the rights of the Mar Menor will be joined by numerous local environmental organisations, associations, groups and neighbours at 1pm on Saturday August 13, when hundreds of protestors are expected to appear, forming a human chain on the shores of the polluted salt-water lagoon.
The striking demonstration has been called exactly a year since “the promises made so far continue to be in the waiting phase and without significant changes in terms of eradicating the pollution that reaches the Mar Menor,” according to the ILP.
Defenders of the Mar Menor lament the fact that copious amounts of nitrates continue to flow freely into the lagoon, while farmers use pesticides, phosphates, herbicides and other polluting chemicals unchecked.
With this call to action, groups from other countries and throughout Spain have been summoned to join the protest under the motto: “All the seas, the same sea.”
This Saturday’s demonstration will have several starting points that will culminate at the lagoon: there will be a water festival in the square of Los Alcázares starting at 11am, after which both adults and children are invited to join the human chain.
In addition, the 'La Manga-Veneziola' Neighbourhood Association plans a peaceful citizen march starting at 7pm, from the Aldeas de Taray to the Puente del Estacio roundabout. Their aim is to highlight "the municipal and service deficiencies in this area."
