Guardia Civil probes three disturbing animal abuse cases in Region of Murcia

Cat shot, kittens dumped and dog beaten: Murcia’s animal abuse incidents alarm authorities

The Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia have their hands full with several disturbing cases of animal abuse under active investigation. So far, three separate individuals are being questioned in relation to the mistreatment of animals in Águilas, Mazarrón and Cartagena.

All of the heinous incidents took place in January.

In the first case, a man from Isla Plana in Cartagena shot his neighbour’s cat several times with an air rifle as part of an ongoing dispute. He is being investigated but the police have yet to make an arrest.

Unbelievably, the cat survived, but it required extensive veterinary treatment for open wounds and bruising.

In Águilas, the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona) is trying to track down the person who dumped two tiny kittens in the town centre. Witnesses saw a man abandoning the newborn cats next to a supermarket.

"Investigators found that the man was a resident of Águilas, who had a cat that had just given birth to two kittens," a spokesperson explained.

The two kittens were taken to a shelter and are awaiting adoption.

Meanwhile, in Mazarrón, several passers-by called the police to report that a man was kicking and beating a small dog in the middle of the street. Once person actually recorded the mistreatment on his mobile phone, so the abuser was quickly identified.

"Investigators found that an elderly resident of the municipality had mistreated a dog, a small breed miniature pinscher, hitting it on several occasions," a Guardia Civil statement said.

According to the suspect, his dog “had disobeyed him” and so deserved the beating. Like the subject from Águilas, proceedings have been opened against this alleged abuser of his pet.

However, because the dog wasn’t injured, he was left with his owner, but the court in charge of the matter could remove the animal at a later date.

With the main objective of raising awareness among citizens to promote the necessary measures for the protection, management and welfare of domestic animals, as well as to report any behaviour contrary to animal welfare of which they are aware, the Guardia Civil launched the #YoSiPuedoContarlo campaign in July 2017.

Since then, there’s been a definite increase in the number of abuse reports lodged with the authorities.
