Mogán, Gran Canaria’s second most important tourism district and situated just 93 kilometres from the capital of Las Palmas, is planning to introduce a series of new rules and regulations aimed at cracking down on unruly and undesirable tourist behaviour.

 

The Balearic Islands made the headlines at the beginning of the summer by limiting alcohol consumption at many all-inclusive resorts in an attempt to stem the drunken antics of some holidaymakers, and the notoriously conservative government in Mogán is following suit, banning drinking on the street and fining anyone caught sleeping in a public place, day or night.

 

Like several other areas in Spain, tourists will be slapped with sanctions for wearing swimwear in the street or going without a T-shirt, and visitors and locals alike will be banned from hanging their clothes over balconies to dry.

 

In other more welcome changes, Mogán will reportedly prohibit all firecrackers that produce noise and placing advertising fliers under car wind shields.

 

A City Hall source explained the reasoning behind the tough new rules: "The proliferation of certain types of behaviour in recent years, such as nudism, wearing nothing but underwear or carrying erotic items in public means that we have to introduce new regulations. Public spaces must be preserved as places where people can meet, coexist and enjoy their leisure time while respecting others.”

 

The penalties for flouters will range from 750 euros for minor offences up to 3,000 euros for more serious infractions.

 

The regulations come hot on the heels of Malaga’s new zero-tolerance approach to lewd and disruptive behaviour. Earlier this month the popular destination implemented a series of fines targeted primarily at hen and stag parties, punishing offences such as wearing rude costumes.
