ARCHIVED - Gothic arch supports to be put on display in Cartagena castle museum
Cartagena City Council will relocate two corbels in the Torre del Homenaje of the Concepción Castle

The Department of Archaeological Heritage of the City Council of Cartagena is planning to recover two architectural structures which, together with fourteen others, supported the Gothic arches that originally covered the keep of the Castillo de la Concepción, built at the end of the 13th century.
These corbels, as they are known, are currently at the foot of the castle, but will now be moved inside and exhibited at the Torre del Homenaje at a cost of 18,148.79 euros.
“In the coming weeks, these two large pieces will be on display on the first floor of the Torre del Homenaje, as part of an exhibition project that will help to interpret the architectural characteristics of this construction,” said Deputy Mayor Ana Belén Castejón.
History of cathedral architectural elements in Cartagena

In 1972 the Municipal Archaeological Museum requested the transfer of the pieces to Cartagena with the aim of integrating them into the castle’s keep, taking advantage of the fact that the Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture had undertaken work to rebuild the original Gothic vaulting of the medieval fortification.
In the end, however, that project was not carried out as planned for a number of reasons, and the two corbels have remained, since then, at the foot of the Torre del Homenaje of the Castillo de la Concepción.
“The National Archaeological Museum of Madrid asked the City Council of Cartagena to relocate the two corbels in a space that meets conservation criteria. To this end, the City Council of Cartagena will undertake the transfer of these two pieces to place them inside the tower," said the Ms Castejón.
