<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - Fuengirola police commissioner arrested for coercion and security violations

A senior Malaga police official and a well-known Fuengirola businessman have been arrested on Monday March 6 after a lengthy investigation into crimes of coercion, security violation leading to serious damage to public interest and the discovery and disclosure of secrets.

José María Tocornal, who took up office as Fuengirola police commissioner five years ago, was detained alongside high-profile hospitality entrepreneur Salomon Kadosh. The case against the pair claims that the commissioner revealed private and sensitive information to the businessman, for which Torcornal will be suspended without pay for the duration of the investigation.

Both men are expected to appear before a judge in the next few hours and the commissioner’s home has already been searched for incriminating evidence.

On learning of the arrests, Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska assured that his department was cooperating fully with investigating officers, adding that the National Police and Guardia Civil’s “tolerance for any criminal conduct is zero”.

The operation began a year and a half ago when Torcornal’s phones were tapped and suspect conversations between him and the businessman were recorded.

Sources close to the case have revealed that the commissioner passed on sensitive information to Kadosh which was designed to help his business interests, and he also stands accused of omitting to prosecute crimes.

A member of the Superior Police Corp since 1983, 62-year-old José María Tocornal was promoted to commissioner of Fuengirola in January 2018 and has three police merit crosses with a white badge under his belt.
