From Mar 28 Xian Terracotta Army exhibition at MARQ Alicante Provincial Archaeological Museum
The exhibition is "one of the main cultural events of the year in Spain” this year, according to organisers
Located in Xi'an, the Terracotta Army is one of the most famous attractions in China. It is considered to be one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world and one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century.
And from the end of March 2023 until January 28, 2024, a selection of the incredible collection will be on display in Alicante at the MARQ Provincial Archaeological Museum.
This is the first time that part of the Terracotta Army of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Sihuhan, has left China since before the pandemic, and the exhibition is one of the most anticipated events in MARQ's calendar. In fact, organisers have claimed it is "one of the main cultural events of the year in Spain” this year.
It was scheduled to open in 2021 after initiating contacts in 2017, but the Covid pandemic cut short the plans.
The legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties: The warriors of Xi'an, China
Some 120 original pieces from nine museums and historic departments will be on display at MARQ. Arguably the stars of the exhibition are the nine terracotta warriors and a horse which, together make up the the maximum of 10 original figures allowed to be loaned to other countries by the Chinese authorities.
Replicas of two bronze chariots will also be on display, along with audiovisuals, graphics and multimedia material.
Other highlights include a general in armour, a goose figure, a funerary chariot, a kneeling archer, a bell and a suit of armour.
The chance discovery of this large army of life-size terracotta warriors in 1974 is still under investigation by experts in the field. More than 2,000 figures have been recovered to date, but there are believed to be more than 8,000.
The magical warriors that guarded the entrance to the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang, form, without doubt, one of the most important archaeological sites of the 20th century.
Thanks to this army that was hidden underground for millennia, more can be discovered about how people lived in China 2,000 years ago. The Terracotta Army was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
Museum officials expect hundreds of thousands of people to visit the exhibition of the warriors of Xi'an in Alicante from March 28, one the most exhibitions in MARQ's history.
Tickets for 'The Legacy of the Qin and Han Dynasties, China' exhibition cost 5 euros and are available both on MARQ's website and at the museum's ticket offices.
