ARCHIVED - Free bus and tram travel, cycle routes and bike repair workshops: Mobility Week in Murcia city
From September 16-22, Murcia City Council is organising more than 50 activities to promote sustainable mobility

It’s the start of mobility week in Murcia city, and that means a whole host of activities and free offers to promote sustainable transport and a more eco-friendly lifestyle in the capital. Among them, the most popular is the traditional Car Free Day on Thursday September 22, when bus travel is absolutely free to encourage people not to use their cars so much, and pollute less.
European Mobility Week, promoted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, will be held between September 16 and 22 and the theme chosen by the European Commission for this year's 2022 campaign is ‘Connecting Better’.
The Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, who presented the more than 50 activities, stresses that “with this programme we want to insist that sustainable mobility in cities is essential, so that citizens gain in clean air, physical exercise, mental health, care of our environment, entertainment in our urban journeys and, ultimately, the recovery of life in the streets of cities.”
The activities start on Friday September 16 with a round table discussion ‘The future of mobility in Murcia’, which takes place in the Moneo building at 6pm. At the same time, and until 8pm, the ‘Parking Day’ will start on Calle Jaime I with board games and other activities. There will also be a stand where people can come with their broken electronic devices to have them repaired, and there will be a workshop on the maintenance of electric vehicles.
The activity ‘Pedestrian Itineraries’ will also begin, with a walk through the most emblematic squares and plazas in Murcia.
On Saturday September 17, from 9am to 9pm, the ‘12 hours by bike’ initiative will take place with checkpoints at the ZigZag Leisure Centre, Artillery Barracks, Víctor Villegas Auditorium, Primero de Mayo and Jardín de la Seda. In addition, at 10am the ‘Pedestrian Itineraries’ will visit the Contraparada interpretation centre and the Emuasa water treatment plant, and take a tour of the riverside woodland.
In the Monteazahar garden in Beniaján, a bicycle repair and maintenance advice point will be set up.
In addition, all Real Murcia football season ticket holders will be able to attend Saturday’s match against Numancia using the tram free of charge.
At 7.30pm, there is a night route by bicycle through places such as El Palmar, Era Alta, Aljucer and Rincón de Seca.
On Sunday September 18, the XXV Marcha Cicloturista will set off from the Reina Sofía Hospital. And in the Gran Vía and Plaza Belluga axis, different free activities will take place between 11am and 10pm, including a protest march on bike, roller skates or any other non-motorised vehicle to demand a sustainable mobility model for Murcia.
