Four foreigners arrested in Murcia for selling a 2-year-old girl

Totana police say the girl’s parents allegedly sold her to another family for €20,000

Four Honduran nationals have been arrested in Murcia over the illegal adoption of a two-year-old girl in a case involving an alleged €20,000 payment.

The investigation began after social services in Totana detected concerns involving two families of Honduran origin. The Region of Murcia's Ministry of Social Policy, Families and Equality subsequently alerted the National Police's Juvenile Unit.

The girl's family had been monitored by the authorities since her birth in 2024, with measures put in place to assess the situation and protect her welfare.

According to the police investigation, the girl's parents had offered her to an acquaintance and agreed a system of weekly and monthly payments. The other family also took responsibility for the child's living expenses and care, as well as costs linked to what they believed were the necessary administrative procedures.

Investigators discovered that efforts had also been made to make the arrangement appear legal.

The families were given to believe that a specialist lawyer was handling the process and that the director of the nursery attended by the girl could confirm that everything was being carried out properly. Police say false telephone calls were made as part of the plan, including calls supposedly confirming that the procedure was legitimate.

With the child considered to be at serious risk, the National Police moved quickly in coordination with the Region of Murcia's child protection services.

The four people involved, the girl's parents and the two people seeking to take over her care, were arrested.

They are facing charges of illegal adoption, fraud and identity theft.

The investigation remains ongoing while the relevant child protection authorities deal with the girl's situation.
