Fiestas in Puerto Lumbreras

The main local fiestas of Puerto Lumbreras take place in October

Fiestas in Puerto LumbrerasThe annual local fiestas are an important part of any Spanish village, town or city, and Puerto Lumbreras is no exception with a range of events, some religious and others rather less so, which punctuate the calendar year.

Among these some are common to the rest of the Region of Murcia, while others are unique to the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras, as is the case of the local holiday to commemorate independence from Lorca on 7th July and the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in October.

Semana Santa

As is the case almost everywhere in the Region of Murcia the week leading up to Easter Sunday in Puerto Lumbreras features various processions which, while outwardly religious, have come to transcend the Fiestas in Puerto LumbrerasCatholic faith and form part of the identity of the town.

There are three brotherhoods responsible for these processions, the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Fé y María Santísima de la Piedad, the Cofradía de la Virgen de los Dolores and the Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, and the events take place on Palm Sunday, Easter Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Thursday night procession is held in solemn silence (as it is in the regional capital), while the others are far noisier affairs, and the Easter Sunday event is one of joy at the Resurrection.

Click the following link for the 2017 Puerto Lumbreras Semana Santa program, which is representative of the format of Easter Week every year.

Summer festival activities

Every summer during July and August the Town Hall of Puerto Lumbreras lays on a series of activities Fiestas in Puerto Lumbrerasdesigned for both the local population and the tourists who flock to the Costa Cálida, including sports, guided tours, events for children  and a range of cultural activities. This latter category includes, dance, folklore, flamenco, other concerts and exhibitions.

However, the program for these events does not follow a fixed schedule from year to year: instead, every spring the Town Hall produces a different set of activities which can be viewed in the What's on Puerto Lumbreras subject heading.

7th July

This is a local holiday in Puerto Lumbreras to commemorate the municipality’s independence from Lorca in 1958, and various events are held to celebrate the day.

Annual fiestas of Nuestra Señora del Rosario

Fiestas in Puerto LumbrerasThe prologue to the annual fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the “Baile de la Reina”, which is held on one of the Saturdays of September and includes the naming of the year’s Fiestas Queen.

But the main events take place in the first week of October, the climax being on 7th October, another local holiday. On this date the events include a Carnival-style float parade, an arts and crafts market and a floral offering to the Virgen del Rosario, as well as the procession of the figure of the devotee of the parish church through the streets of Puerto Lumbreras.

Outlying districts

In addition to these fiestas, there are local celebrations in the “pedanías” (outlying districts). These fall in Fiestas in Puerto LumbrerasAugust in Puerto Adentro and on and around 8th December in El Esparragal, which includes the village of La Estación.

Other fiestas are also observed, such as the Día de la Región on 9th June, Three Kings, Carnival, Christmas (Navidad) and several local romerías (Romería de la Virgen del Rocío in El Esparragal, Fiestas of the Virgen del Carmen in the pedanía of Goñar, and Los Limoneros and the Fiestas in honour of the Niño de Nápoles in the Zona del Descanso de Puerto Lumbreras.

Puerto Lumbreras Tourist Office

Oficina de Turismo de Puerto Lumbreras

The municipality of Puerto Lumbreras lies in the south-west of the Region of Murcia on the border with Andalucía, and features a landscape which alternates between mountains such as the Cabezo de la Jara (1,242 metres) and the fertile lowlands of the Guadalentín valley, where leaf vegetables and flowers are among the crops grown.

The location of the town on the main route between Murcia and the Andalucían cities of Granada and Seville Puerto Lumbreras Tourist Officehas made it a logical stopping point for travellers for many centuries. Visitors are attracted by the castle, the restored cave homes below it which have been converted into exhibition rooms and the astronomical observatory in the Cabezo de la Jara.

The Tourist Information Office of Puerto Lumbreras is unusual in that it is located not in the town centre, close to the castle and the cave houses, but on the edge of the built-up area. This may seem strange, but it is also logical, as its location is on the roundabout of the exit from the motorway as it rings the town to the north, and the office is thus easy to find for visitors to Puerto Lumbreras.

Make sure you're in the right hand slip lane as the entrance to the tourist office is immediately to the right hand side.

The tourist office contains a full selection of maps and leaflets about the municipality and its points of interest.
