ARCHIVED - Feeling Hot Hot Hot: exceptional measures adopted in Spain to beat the heat
Climate shelters have been opened across Spain and school hours reduced to endure the heatwave
As most of Spain blisters in the earliest heatwave of the past 40 years, with several communities in the south of the country reaching a sweltering 43ºC this week, several regions are employing novel measures to counteract the heat, setting up climate shelters and reducing work and school hours.
Since the temperatures are expected to remain extremely high until at least Thursday June 16, the Civil Protection has issued its usual guidelines: limit sun exposure, drink plenty of water and avoid prolonged physical exercise in the middle of the day. But this isn’t always enough, and many provinces are employing novel measures to beat the heat.
Cities are usually much warmer than coastal areas, and in Barcelona the City Council has launched its heatwave procedure this week, opening 197 air-conditioned climate shelters, 42 more than were available in the height of the summer last year and 127 more than in 2020, when the initiative was first launched.
In the Region of Murcia, where the mercury is set to top out in the high 30s this week, schools and education centres are allowed to close early if the temperature hits 27ºC and the classrooms don’t have air-con. The local council in Murcia city has also started a special monitoring program for homeless people, whom staff will check on routinely, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Meanwhile, in Andalucía, where some of the hottest temperatures are expected this week, children have also been given permission to leave school early, although some parents in Cordoba have launched a protest over the faulty air-conditioning systems in classrooms.
In Castilla-La Mancha, the regional health authorities have advised against outings and physical activity in the middle of the day while in Toledo, where the annual Corpus Christi festival is underway, the council plans to distribute 8,000 fans and 10,000 bottles of water free of charge at several points on the procession route.
