ARCHIVED - Fears that discharge in La Manga could be wastewater leak
Technicians are sampling the spillage at Galúa beach in La Manga to determine if it is harmful

The General Directorate of the Environment opened an investigation on Wednesday August 17 to try to determine the origin and chemical composition of a water discharge into the Mediterranean Sea on Galúa beach in La Manga following several complaints from locals and the Municipal Citizen Movement Group (MC).
The discharge is coming from just below the Hotel Galúa but initial reports from an Environment source indicate that “it does not seem like residual or polluting water” and that "it could be a discharge from the pool that is located just above, inside the hotel."
The big fear, of course, is that pollutants may enter the water, posing a huge risk to marine life. For this very reason, the deputy spokesperson for MC, Jesús Giménez Gallo has requested that the regional and local administration to investigate the spill immediately.

“We do not know if the discharge is illegal or not, what is a fact is that the stone on which the water is poured has taken on a brownish tone, different from that of the surrounding rocks, which has set off the alarms of the citizens of the area", Mr Jesús Giménez warned in Twitter.
Although the discharge is located just below the hotel, its exact origin is still unknown, and there is every possibility that "it could come from some urbanization in the area."
Faced with the complaint from the Cartagena association, the General Directorate has assured that "the technicians will carry out an inspection and take samples to analyse the chemical composition of the discharge" coming from the broken pipe.
