The sculpture of a giant sardine that sits in the middle of the Segura River as it passes through Murcia city has thrown up a surprise this week as it seems to be working as a fully functioning fountain again.

The iconic metal fish, which lives in the water of the Río Segura near the Puente de los Peligros, stopped spitting water out of its mouth 10 years ago, and has only just started up again this week.

It was first installed in 2007 as a tribute to the city’s famous ‘Burial of the Sardine’ fiesta, which takes place every year in April. It had been dry for the last 10 years, since 2013, according to Murcia City Council.

The sculpture in bronze, the work of Miguel Llamas, shows a sardine emerging from the river and is one of the emblems of the city, placed as it is right in front of the City Hall.

From the mouth of the sculpture comes a powerful jet of water driven by an internal pump, accompanied by spectacular night-time illumination.
