ARCHIVED - Extensive viewing point commissioned for the Castillejo de Monteagudo in Murcia
The renovations at this Murcia landmark will cost 1.2 million euros and take 18 months to complete
One of the most important early medieval sites in the Region of Murcia, the Castillejo de Monteagudo (the summer pàlace of the Wolf King in Monteagudo), will soon have a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the ruins of the 12th century Moorish castle, the surrounding countryside and of course, the Rio de Janeiro-style 14-metre-high statue of Christ which stands nearby.
The extensive restoration and conservation project was actually approved for a state subsidy at the beginning of 2021, but the works contract has just been awarded to the tune of 1.2 million euros with an estimated completion target of 18 months time.
The new viewing point or ‘mirador’ at Alcázar de Ibn Sad, popularly known as the Castillejo and located in the historic site of Monteagudo, “will be more accessible and it will be adapted to the existing topography”, according to sources from the Murcia City Council.
Only recyclable materials will be used to help the structure blend in with its surroundings and allow further enhancements to the site in the future.
The project will restore several sections of the wall structures of what remains of the fortress and the access roads require considerable improvement; in keeping with the historical importance of the area, all restoration work will be carried out using traditional techniques and materials as similar as possible to the originals.
Archaeological excavation will be carried out on the lower enclosure in tandem, and part of the funding will go towards rebuilding the outer walls and those of the upper chamber and to improving the lighting of the entire site.
“When setting the intervention guidelines of the project, the historical, functional, constructive values and, especially, the originality of the structures on which action is going to be carried out have been taken into account,” the same sources added.
