Extensive road works to turn Murcia into a greener city
As part of a plan to promote cycling and public transport use, the Puente Viejo in Murcia will now be closed to cars forever

Big changes are afoot on the roads in Murcia city, with the ‘Plan de Movilidad’ or Mobility Plan getting underway this week. Most notably, the plan involves changing the direction of travel of several streets and closing the Puente de los Peligros, also known as the Old Bridge, permanently.
Murcia City Council has said that the new traffic management in the Barrio del Carmen neighbourhood will improve the air quality “significantly” by limiting the traffic on several streets to public buses and bicycles.

The city also recently introduced a new e-scooter hire scheme, although the success of that has been mixed and the reception muted.
After the closure of the Old Bridge (in Spanish, Puente Viejo) to private vehicles, the Barrio del Carmen will be accessible via the Miguel Caballero footbridge and the street Calle Juan Antonio Hernández del Águila, on which the direction of travel will change from outbound tom inbound.
The exit to Avenida Teniente Flomesta will be via the Puente del Hospital bridge.
The Alameda de Colón thoroughfare will be closed to traffic during the works in the direction of Plaza González Conde, but open to traffic in the direction going from Plaza González Conde to Calle Hernández del Águila.
Vehicles coming from Calle Cartagena will have to follow the direction towards Calle Hernández del Águila, continuing along Calle Proclamación.

Once the works have been completed, Alameda de Colón will be definitively closed to private traffic, and only be open to buses.
Over the next few weeks, work will be carried out to put in new signposts, demolish the old pavements and put new ones in, and to create new segregated bus and cycle lanes on the aforementioned streets.
At the same time, the City Council plans to change the direction of traffic on Avenida de La Flota, only allowing traffic access from Avenida Juan de Borbón to Plaza Juan XXIII.
