The thought of someone stealing a beloved pet is heartbreaking, yet experts say organised criminal gangs are increasingly targeting popular breeds because they can be sold quickly for thousands of euros.

 

Although Spain doesn't publish detailed figures by breed, police and insurance data from elsewhere in Europe show clear patterns that are just as relevant to dog owners here.

 

The French Bulldog tops the list of Europe's most stolen breed thanks to its huge popularity and high resale value. Chihuahuas are another favourite because they're small enough to snatch in seconds, followed by Staffordshire Bull Terriers and similar breeds, young German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, and the increasingly fashionable Dachshund.

 

Experts say thieves are often looking for dogs that can be sold online, used in illegal breeding operations or, in the case of some larger breeds, exploited for criminal activities.

 

Summer can make pets even more vulnerable. Dogs are more likely to accompany their owners to cafés, beaches and parks, creating opportunities for thieves to strike if they're left unattended for even a few moments.

 

That's one reason why Spain's Animal Welfare Law now prohibits owners from leaving dogs tied up outside shops or other establishments while they go inside. The legislation was introduced to improve animal welfare and reduce the risks dogs face when left alone, including theft. Many cafés, bars and other businesses now welcome dogs, although it's always worth checking before you go.
