Enjoy a visit to Yecla this August!
Explore the uncrowded countryside and the historical and cultural treasures of Yecla
Like many inland locations of the Region of Murcia Yecla enjoys a quiet month in August, but that doesn’t mean there’s no point in visiting: quite the contrary, make the most of the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast and rediscover the “real Spain” in a town full of history, its own tastes and its rural delights!
Monuments
The rich cultural heritage of Yecla can be seen in a whole series of old buildings and monuments, including the iconic Basílica de la Purísima, instantly recognizable for its blue and White dome and the interior covered in artistic murals of religious significance. At the same time, take a trip up the old castle hill to see the Santuario del Castillo, where you can pay your respects to the figure of the patron of Yecla and see the chapel of the “Santísimo Cristo del Sepulcro”. Step outside and you have incredible panoramic views out over the town and the surrounding countryside!

The Cayetano de Mergelina archaeological musuem
When visiting Yecla this is another venue which must not be missed, a veritable treasure trove of local history (and, by implication, of the history of south-eastern Spain) which is home to an impressive array of artifacts and archaeological findings.
The museum is open every day of the week except Mondays from 10.00 to 13.00, other than the week which runs from August 10th to 18th.
Special bookings can be made in advance on 968 790901, timetable 9.00 to 13.00.
Connect with Nature
In Yecla nature-lovers can be sure of a true paradise to explore at their leisure, including the mountains of Sierra Salinas where there are plenty of hiking and walking routes.
Of course, another treat in the cool of the morning is the unique landscape of Monte Arabí, which is home to prehistoric rock art and unusual rock formations and has been declared a Natural Monument of the Region of Murcia as well as an Item of Cultural Interest.
Don’t forget, sun cream and plenty of drinking water are essential!!
Take a dip in the pool at the Los Rosales leisure centre
There’s no getting around it, it’s hot in the Region of Murcia in summer, and although the nights tend to be around 8 degrees cooler in Yecla than in coastal areas during August it can still get very warm during the afternoon!
So, after a morning sightseeing or exploring the countryside, there’s no place better to go that the Centro de Ocio Los Rosales, home to the municipal open-air pool on the outskirts of the town at the foot of the castle hill.
The pool complex is open to the public during August at the following times:
Monday 16.00 to 21.00
Tuesday to Sunday 11.00 to 21.00
(closing at 20.00 from August 12 onwards)
Wine tourism
As the vineyards of Yecla prepare for the picking of the first grapes of the season the establishments affiliated to the Wine Route remain open, although on a more limited timetable than at other times of the year:
Restaurante Sierra Cazorla: open all month.
Arrocería Brandy: open all month.
Asador Pachamama: open all month.
Restaurante Candilejas: open all month.
Barrabas: open all month.
Restaurante El Olivo de Jaén: open all month.
Restaurante Aurora: closed until August 30.
Bodegas Conde de Montornés: Open Saturday to Wednesday morning only, Wednesday to Friday both morning and afternoon.
Bodegas Barahonda: closed from August 9.

Oficina de Turismo de Yecla
Yecla is a large municipality in the north of the Region of Murcia, home to just under 35,000 people, and these days is best known for its wines, which enjoy Denomination of Origin status, and its furniture production, which has its origins in the abundance of pine trees on the mountainsides and the high plateaux.
While visitors in the 21st century may be attracted primarily by wine tourism, the town (or city, as it was proclaimed in 1878) also has a wide historical, cultural and natural heritage, and an identity quite different from the coastal areas of the Region of Murcia. For this reason it is often grouped together with its neighbour and fellow wine-producing area Jumilla as part of the Altiplano area.
Yecla borders with Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Valencia and is closer to Alicante coastal areas than much of Murcia. These visitors come to see the historic old town itself - an atmospheric and interesting place, crammed full of history - the natural beauty of Monte Arabí, with stunning views for those who enjoy the outdoors, the gastonomy and of course the wine route.
Yecla boasts cave paintings from 10,000 years ago in Monte Arabí, a Bronze Age settlement at El Arabilejo, Iberian remains in El Pulpillo and a Roman administrative centre at Los Torrejones as well as the remnants of the 11th century Moorish castle on the hill behind the town. More modern (and complete) testimony to the past are the buildings in the town centre, which include the grandiose Basílica de la Purísima, with its striking blue dome, the archaeological museum and the attractive Plaza Mayor, where the 16th century Town Hall stands alongside the Renaissance Casa de los Alarcos, the clock tower and the old grain store.
The tourist office holds a full selection of leaflets, maps, pre-planned routes, accommodation and restaurant options and information about visiting Yecla for both individuals and groups.
There is parking close to the tourist office, although those driving to Yecla for the first time are advised to park in Calle Perales.
