Ecological corridor planned around the Mar Menor to reduce the impact of flooding
The eco-sustainable natural filter will protect the Murcia lagoon and surrounding land during periods of heavy rain

The regional government of Murcia plans to create an ecological corridor surrounding the Mar Menor as part of a broader effort to restore and maintain the health of the lagoon and its surrounding environment. The corridor will be designed to serve as a natural filter and water retention system during periods of heavy rainfall.
To achieve this goal, the regional government will identify areas of forest land or natural habitats that can be protected and restored, as well as spaces that require some work to regain their natural functions. Existing trails and natural lands will be integrated into the design of the ecological corridor, which will also include the development of a network of livestock trails.
According to María Cruz Ferreira, the regional secretary of Climate Action, “the Administration must ensure the integrity and recovery of the regional public domain through the development of this specific plan for the recovery of livestock roads and their original width in the catchment area of the Mar Menor.”
The livestock routes specified in the plan include those of Fuente Álamo, San Javier, Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco, San Pedro del Pinatar and, to a lesser extent, Cartagena, La Unión, Mazarrón, Murcia and Alhama de Murcia – in short, all the signatories to the recently created Interadministrative Commission for the Mar Menor. A deadline of two years has been agreed.
“Livestock trails represent a public domain infrastructure extended throughout the territory and whose primary livestock function can and must coexist with a multiplicity of uses from the point of view of sustainable rural development, public, tourist and sports use and environmental protection,” Ms Cruz Ferreira added.
