An electric scooter rider faces a fine of up to 1,000 euros after police in Almoradí spotted him riding erratically with a beer can in his hand and pulled him over for a breathalyser test.

According to the Local Police, he showed "signs of being drunk" circulating around Calle Maestro Serrano and when tested, gave a result of 0.68 mg/litre in exhaled air – more than twice the permitted level of 0.25.

Fines for drink-driving are up to 500 euros, rising to 1,000 euros if the driver exceeds double the permitted limit.

Almoradí Local Police has issued a reminder that "like a car, a scooter is a vehicle and it is forbidden to ride them whilst using mobile devices, with blood alcohol levels higher than those established by the regulations, as well as to circulate in any pedestrian area".
