The Local Police in Orihuela have arrested a drunk driver after he smashed into the façade of an establishment in the town before producing a driver's license in the name of a dead person.

It transpired the vehicle was also registered to said dead person, although it's not clear whether the driver and deceased were known to each other or not.

The police have shared sparse details of the crash on their social networks, confirming the incident happened during the early hours of Monday morning, March 13.

Following the collision, the driver was breathalysed and found to be over the legal limit. He was charged with drunk driving as well as offences related to the usurption of identity and a crime against road safety for not possessing a legal driving licence in his own name.

Following a separate incident on Monday night, the Guardia Civil have arrested a drunk driver in Albacete province following a head-on collision with a pine tree that claimed the life of a passenger.

The fatal crash occurred 3km from the town of Cofrentes when, according to a police statement, the driver left the road despite there being no other traffic. The driver was found to be three times the legal limit for alcohol, and a 46-yerar-old man died on impact.

The drunk driver has been charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.
