Three of the cyclists were injured, one critically, in the horror collision in the Region of Murcia

The Guardia Civil is investigating a 29-year-old Spanish motorist who careered into a group of five cyclists in Alhama de Murcia, seriously injuring three who were hospitalised as a result of the collision on Saturday morning, August 20.

According to sources from the Armed Forces and the Emergency Coordination Centre, the driver was breathalysed and tested positive for alcohol. However, he was not arrested at the scene and later charged with an offence against road safety, for driving under the influence and injuring three people.

The crash occurred at kilometre point 15 on the RM-603 in Alhama at around 8.40am. Emergencias 112 immediately despatched four ambulances and medical crews to the area close to Los Ventorrillo.

When they arrived, three wounded cyclists were "lying injured on the ground and obstructing the road" in great danger of being hit by another vehicle.

Medical staff stabilised the injured who then required hospitalisation. The Haemodynamics Service of the Virgen de la Arrixaca was alerted to the arrival of the most seriously wounded victim, a 52-year-old man who suffered a severe blow to the head when he fell from his bikee onto the asphalt. He remains in ICU.

The other two cyclists were taken to the Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar with cuts and bruises.

The Guardia Civil is now trying to establish how exactly the accident happened and the case will be referred to the courts to decide the motorist's fate.
