ARCHIVED - Diesel prices in Spain exceed EU average for first time
Spain now has the ninth highest fuel costs in the entire European Union
The average price of a litre of diesel in Spain, without taking into account the 20-cent bonus scheme, has exceeded the average of the European Union for the first time since 2005 and according to data from the EU Oil Bulletin, petrol prices are shortly expected to follow suit.
Over the last week, the average price for a litre of diesel in Spain reached 1.911 euros compared to 1.905 across the EU, marking an all-time high in this country.
Spain has always maintained a far lower rate than much of Europe, and despite the government’s discount scheme which entered into force last month, the gap has been shortening in recent weeks.
Depending on how many decimal points are considered in the calculations, the difference is now less than one cent, while the maximum disparity between fuel costs in Spain and the rest of the EU was reached in the second last week of March: at that time, a litre of diesel in Spain cost 1.581 euros while it was 1.793 on average in the EU.
From the data in this week’s Oil Bulletin, Spain now has the ninth most expensive fuel of any of the 27 countries that make up the EU.
In the case of diesel, the Finns are the ones who pay the most per litre, with an average price of 2.218 euros. They are followed by Denmark (2.208 euros), Greece (2.171), the Netherlands (2.153), Germany (2.093), Sweden (1.964), Portugal (1.915), Estonia (1.894) and then Spain, with 1.878 euros per litre.
The cheapest diesel prices are to be found in Hungary (1.252), Malta (1.34), Poland (1.454) and Bulgaria (1.518).
Spain is also in the ninth-highest place when it comes to petrol prices (1.878 euros/litre), surpassed by Sweden (2.257), Finland (2.242), Germany (2.075), Denmark (2.074), the Netherlands (2.046), Belgium (2.04), France (1.943) and Ireland (1.929).
The price of both petrol and diesel remains extremely volatile in Spain and the government is closely monitoring the bigger oil companies and filling stations to establish if they are deliberately hiking up costs to offset the fuel discount.
