ARCHIVED - Covid incidence grows but hospitalisations remain steady: Spain pandemic update October 3
Hospitals and intensive care units in Spain are both well below a 2% occupancy rate

The incidence of coronavirus among the over 60s is rising again throughout Spain, jumping 13.5 points in the last week. It’s a trend across every community, with six regions now passed the 200-case mark, although none exceed 250, which means that the circulation of the virus is still controlled.
Even with a large increase in infections, hospital admissions have remained steady since the last report and the ICUs are staying out of the danger zone for now.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 10,721 new coronavirus infections in Spain on Friday September 30, which brings the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,422,984.
Cumulative incidence rate
Most worrying is the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60. After jumping five points to land at 141.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last update, another eight notches have been added since last Tuesday, with the figure reaching 149.8.
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has also experienced another increase, rising from 70.21 cases to 75.06.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 206.09 cases, followed by septuagenarians (165.94), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (108.87). All of these age groups have, unfortunately, noted an increase since the last report.
Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, the enclave of Ceuta continues to have the best figures but here the incidence rate has also shot up in the last week to stand at 39.54 cases.
It’s followed by Andalucia this week, with an incidence rate of 82.90 and Navarra, which has seen a big increase from 92.41 cases on Friday to 101.07 today.
The Valencian Community is hovering right around the national average, with an incidence rate of 148.69 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Despite the increase in infections, hospital occupancy remains stable.
There are currently 2,279 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain, (73 more than last Friday) while 142 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (an upswing of 13 compared to last week).
These data mean that 1.64% of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid patients (down from 1.65%), while general occupancy has remained at a steady 1.82%.
A further 54 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 114,179 people.
Vaccination data
As of October 3, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,155,608 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,267,154 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
