Councillor for Camposol meets gardening groups
Representatives from the four registered gardening groups meet with the Councillor for Camposol to talk about various issues
Councillor for Camposol, Carmen Navarro held an informal meeting with the registered gardening groups; Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group, B Clean Gardening Group, Greenfingers Gardening group and Camposol D Sector Gardening and Community Group. The Camposol Business Association were also in attendance with President, Julie Townsend acting as translator.
Among the topics discussed, the issue of garden waste was a high priority and after various options were considered it was agreed that the preferred solution was to have 2 collection points on the urbanisation which would be fenced off and have security cameras to dissuade flytipping. The possibility of the areas being manned was also raised and will be looked into further.
The 2 areas agreed on were current areas being used for the deposit of garden waste, one off Calle Andalucia on Sector A and at the southern end of Calle Esparraguera on Sector D. The fenced-off area on Sector C near the vacant hotel will remain as it is with the possiblility that it could be used as a collection point for other types of recycling.
The Councillor explained that the collection of the garden waste currently accumulated in the 5 areas around the urbanisation has been delayed as the contractor who tendered for the work, which by law has to include composting, has put forward a cost in the hundreds of thousands which is in excess of what is classed as minor works and the tender will have to be treated as a major works contract, a process that is more involved and takes longer to approve.
Another topic mentioned by the Councillor is that a European incentive is being started to promote communal gardens and gardening being used as places of tranquillity and wellbeing so there may be funds available for projects of this sort. In convection with this the Councillor also raised the situation that in Spain community gardening groups are not common and did not think, apart from the Camposol groups, that any existed in the Mazarrón munipality, the Councillor went on to ask if the Camposol groups would think about acting as an Ambassador or mentor to other groups around the municipality who may wish to initiate a gardening association or group.
Continuing on the European theme the Councillor spoke about the upcoming Europe Day on May 9, 2025 which the Council are planning to celebrate with various events and asked if the groups would like to hold events either individually or jointly.
