Council condemns spate of mindless vandalism as refuse bins in Mazarron and Camposol set alight
Rubbish bins in the Camposol urbanisation and Puerto de Mazarrón go up in flames as Council blames mindless thugs
Days after rubbish bins were set alight and reduced to melted plastic and ash on C sector of the Camposol urbanisation, early on Sunday morning, September 8, five containers (four for domestic waste and one for glass) were set on fire on Avenida Tierno Galván in Puerto de Mazarrón, causing explosions and a fireball which alarmed nearby residents. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and the local police secured the area to ensure residents' safety.
A similar act of vandalism occurred recently in Camposol, involving the burning of the same number of containers and leaving a burnt mess of melted plastic and the contents of the bins reduced to ash and rubble. Although rubbish bin fires have occurred before on the Camposol urbanisation, this was usually accredited to people putting barbecue embers in the bins before they had cooled sufficiently, which can take up to 48 hours, but in this instance the evidence points to vandalism.
The Mazarrón Councillor for Services and Urban Quality, Tomás Ureña, condemned both of these acts as vandalism and urged the community to promote civic responsibility and protect the urban environment.
In the case of the Camposol urbanisation, a local group promoting sport and exercise, the Camposol Free Community Sports (CFCS), issued a call to arms among its members and a crew of volunteers ably marshalled by Sharon Young and armed with shovels and brooms turned out to clear up the carbonised remnants and sweep the road clean.
Coincidentally, after ongoing talks between the Camposol Business Association and Mazarrón Council, Mazarrón Urban Services Department had instructed Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana, the concern responsible for the provision of refuse and recycling collection, to distribute extra domestic rubbish bins to the urbanisation, the delivery of which started on Monday September 9.
