Costa del Sol city to fine dog owners up to €750 for not washing away urine

Fuengirola town hall has made rinsing dog wee with water and vinegar compulsory

Dog owners in Fuengirola could soon face fines of up to €750 if they don’t wash away their pet’s urine in the street.

The town hall has announced that carrying a small bottle of liquid to dilute dog wee in public areas will now become compulsory, rather than just recommended.

For years, the council has encouraged owners to bring a bottle filled with water and a splash of vinegar to pour over any urine left on pavements and walls. Now, that advice is being turned into an official rule.

The change comes after an update to the town’s Citizen Coexistence ordinance was initially approved in a municipal plenary session back in February. Once fully processed, failing to rinse away your dog’s urine will count as a minor offence, with fines of up to €750.

Mayor Ana Mula said the move is aimed at keeping neighbourhoods clean and pleasant, adding that Fuengirola prides itself on the condition of its public spaces.

The council says it has already been promoting the use of small bottles through local TV campaigns, social media and even handing them out to residents. Those awareness campaigns will continue throughout 2026 while the updated regulation is finalised.

Officials insist that issuing fines is not the main goal, but they want to underline that rinsing away urine is a simple step that helps prevent bad smells and stains, especially during the hotter months.
