Child of woman accused of Orihuela Costa murder was also stabbed
Investigators have yet to establish if the 10-year-old was injured while trying to defend his father
The case surrounding the alleged murder of a Norwegian man by his 49-year-old wife in Orihuela Costa took a sinister turn this week when it was revealed by the authorities that the couple’s 10-year-old son had also suffered a stab wound.
Despite a statement from the young witness, it’s still not clear whether the child was accidentally injured during the altercation or if he was trying to protect his father.
On Friday August 2, the suspect called the emergency services herself to report that she had stabbed her husband to death following hours of domestic abuse. The couple’s three children, aged 10, 8 and 6, were all present during the prolonged attack.
The family reportedly moved from Norway to a holiday home on Pau 9 on the Garbanzuelo estate, close to the border with Torrevieja, back in May.
The arrested woman claims that she has been subjected to years of abuse and death threats and in order to shed some light on the terrible events of August 2, the eldest child was asked to give a statement via the Gesell camera system from the Alicante centre where he and his siblings are being looked after.
However, the child was clearly still in a state of shock and his testimony was understandably confusing. He also contradicted himself, saying at one point that he was injured in the middle of the struggle and later claiming that he was stabbed while trying to protect his dad.
One of the woman’s lawyers explained that the traumatised boy’s statement was “very confusing,” but Mr Otharán, from the Quiroga Sánchez law firm in Alicante, has blamed this largely on the police interrogation technique used on the child, which he likened to a “terrorist” being “tortured” for a confession. The law office has since demanded that the “pressured” statement be deemed null and void by the judge.
All of the child’s rights were violated, Mr Otharán claims, in what he believes was “shameful, unusual and unprecedented” treatment of a minor victim.
For its part, the High Court of Justice insists that “all guarantees and rights have been respected” and that “the child stopped the statement when he wanted.”
Meanwhile, the accused mother remains behind bars in Fontcalent recovering from the serious injuries she suffered to her arm during the altercation.
The family’s lawyers are trying to arrange custody of the three children for the woman’s brother, who flew to Spain from Norway last weekend.
