ARCHIVED - Cedacero road to La Azohia and Isla Plana will reopen this Wednesday
The RM-22 road opens again this week after being closed for two months after the appearance of a larch sinkhole in March
The RM-E22 road linking Cartagena with Isla Plana and La Azohía is due to reopen to traffic this Wednesday, June 15, after it was closed back in March when torrential rains undermined the already shoddy road surface and created a dramatic sinkhole.
Repair work to the road initially only affected a stretch of about 100 metres near the Cuestas del Cedacero point, but this was subsequently extended to two other points and the budget for the work more than tripled after further imperfections were identified, most likely due to shortcuts being taken when the road was last repaired more than 10 years ago.
The work that has been carried out on the road consists of building slopes seven metres high to secure the platform the road rests on. This was first done at kilometre 9.8, and later at the area of the viewpoint, which is at kilometre, while other work was carried out at kilometre 9.2.
The announcement of the reopening of the road comes at the same time as a protest was scheduled by the Isla Plana Neighbourhood Association for Monday afternoon at the Campillo de Adentro junction to demand the work be sped up.
The Regional Ministry of Public Works has stated that all that is left do now is to install barricades at the side of the road, repaint the lanes and put in new signposting.
“What began as emergency work due to damage caused by the storm in March has become a large-scale project with the aim of anticipating future landslides by securing the area,” they said Fomento.
