Caravaca demands aid for farmers as drought threatens the agricultural sector

The City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz has submitted two urgent requests to the central and regional governments demanding financial aid for the agricultural and livestock sectors, which have already lost millions this year because of the ongoing drought.

Mayor José Francisco García has described the situation being faced by the sector as “dramatic and unsustainable” with “dry crops completely lost and livestock farming unsustainable due to lack of food in the field.”

According to a report prepared earlier this week by the Northwest Agrarian Regional Office, cereal farmers have lost an estimated 6 million euros so far this season and the almond harvest is down 7.5 million.

“Furthermore, the lack of pasture and the need for supplementary feeding costs an extra 2 million euros for farmers, which makes the activity practically unfeasible. The fruit doesn’t have any better luck either, since 90% of the apricots don’t reach the required size and they can’t sell them on the market,” the mayor added.

Mr García has insisted on the need for “the Government of Spain to speed up the procedures to implement as soon as possible a royal decree that includes both direct aid and fiscal measures with tax exemptions, or else agriculture and livestock – activities that are essential for life, the economy and for the environment itself – are in serious danger.”

In an extraordinary sitting of the Council of Ministers which has been called to respond to the drought, the government has announced it will limit outdoor work during heatwaves.
