It’s a common sight in Spain: a canine companion tied up outside a shop or supermarket, patiently waiting for its owners to return. Periodically, the Guardia Civil will launch a campaign warning against this practice, which they say can lead to several detrimental outcomes.

What are the risks to dogs?

The latest social media drive has highlighted the fact that the dog may become too cold or overheated, depending on the season, and there have even been cases where dogs have strangled themselves on their leash due to anxiety. There is a risk that the pooch may run away, eat something dangerous left on the street, or as is increasingly common, be stolen.

"We do not stop receiving complaints from people who, after leaving their dog tied in front of a store or even unattended in the street, have not seen their animal again", highlighted the Foundation for Advice and Action in Defence of Animals (FAADA).

The most likely outcomes of leaving pets unattended:

The dog will be stolen

Unscrupulous people searching for purebred animals for breeding may take it

Dog fight organisers and animal abusers on the prowl for animals could find it

The animal causes, or is involved in, a road traffic accident

The town hall could pick up the dog and the owners are then liable for the expense

If an owner does not locate their pet in time, the dog could be euthanized by an animal shelter
