Cabo de Palos lighthouse granted maximum heritage protection

The iconic Cartagena landmark has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest to ensure its preservation for future generations

The lighthouse of Cabo de Palos, one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Murcia coast, has now been granted the highest level of heritage protection under Spanish law. The Royal Decree, approved by the Council of Ministers, officially classifies the lighthouse as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC – Bien de Interés Cultural), ensuring its long-term conservation.

Authorities emphasise that this designation is not only about protecting the physical structure but also about safeguarding its historical, scientific and technical legacy.

As the official decree states: "The classification of the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse in Cartagena as a BIC aims to protect its historical, scientific and technical heritage, as well as to increase knowledge of it and take appropriate measures for its proper conservation."

A landmark with centuries of history

The origins of the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse date back to the San Antonio Tower, a defensive structure built in 1578 during the reign of Philip II to guard against Barbary pirate attacks. This original hexagonal tower was demolished in 1862, and its stones were reused in constructing the present lighthouse, designed by engineers Juan Moreno Rocafull and Evaristo de Churruca. The lighthouse was officially lit on January 31, 1865, standing 30 metres above sea level, offering visibility of over 20 nautical miles.

Between 1875 and 1900, the lighthouse also housed the Theoretical-Practical School of Lighthouse Keepers, where future lighthouse keepers were trained. In 1960, it was electrified, and in 1971, it underwent a modernisation process, replacing its optics, lantern, and other equipment, some of which are still in use today.

A cultural and historical symbol

Today, the lighthouse is not just a functional maritime signal; it has become a symbol of Cabo de Palos and a major tourist attraction.

The structure itself is an impressive sight, rising 81 metres above sea level with a tower height of 51 metres, making it one of the tallest lighthouses in Spain.

Visitors to Cabo de Palos can admire the lighthouse from the outside, as its interior is not currently open to the public. However, there are ongoing projects exploring ways to enhance visitor experiences while maintaining conservation efforts.

With its new BIC classification, the future of the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse is now more secure than ever, ensuring that it continues to stand as a beacon of history and culture on the Mediterranean coast.
