ARCHIVED - British Vice Consul provides information to clear Camposol confusion on voting registration
After contradictory information emerges the British Vice Consul seeks clarification from the Election Authority
After contradictory information emerged on Social media advising all British expats to make an appointment at Mazarrón Town Hall in order to register to vote in next year’s municipal election, the British Vice Consul has provided information from the INE (Electoral Authority) on the process for voter registration now that the UK is no longer in the EU.
The following information has been received today (December 2) from the Vice Consul after confirmation from the INE Alicante Diputación:
“The information is clear and detailed and is in multiple languages (click on the flag to change language): https://votoresidentesalicante.com/home-en/. I realise you are in Murcia, not Alicante, but this information is the same across the board, the only difference is that your letters will be sent to the Murcia INE office instead of the Alicante one.
“I can confirm the letters were sent at the end of November to everyone who meets the requirements (three years legal residency in Spain) so they should start to arrive today or at the start of next week. People who receive the letter should not take this letter to the town hall. They should either sign and date it and send it back to the INE (it comes with a pre-paid addressed envelope) or they can complete the registration online using the code that is provided in the letter (no need for a digital certificate).
“We recognise that some letters may get lost in the post, especially on big urbanisations like Camposol where there are difficulties with the post arriving. If anyone does not receive their letter they should go to the town hall with their passport, residency document (TIE or green certificate) and padron certificate. The town hall will then get them to fill in a registration form and the town hall will send this to the INE office.”
Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations, Silvana Buxton is liaising with the Council department that deals with voter registration to ensure that the procedure is clear and to avoid duplication the department will not currently action any voter registration in order to allow time for the INE letters to be received taking into consideration that there are 2 bank holidays next week (Tuesday 6 Constitution Day and Thursday 8 Day of the Immaculate Conception) the window for voter registration is open until January 15, 2023.
