In another disturbing event, a Santiago de la Ribera home was violently robbed by gun-wielding thieves
On Tuesday August 20, the summer serenity in San Javier was well and truly shattered when a 48-year-old English man instigated a dramatic showdown that had the entire town on the edge of its seat.
In the late afternoon, at approximately 8pm, the individual in question, who hasn’t been named by the authorities, forcibly entered a neighbour's house on Calle López Peña in Santiago de la Ribera, which is coincidentally right across the street from the General Air Force Academy.
This, however, was merely the prelude to a far more ominous sequence of events.
Once he was inside, the intruder promptly barricaded himself in the house and brandished a knife, threatening to harm the terrified homeowner. However, the neighbour somehow managed to escape unharmed, leaving the assailant alone within the confines of the house.
The police had arrived by this time following several calls, and what ensued was a standoff lasting an agonising three hours. During this tense period, the Briton shouted threats from the balcony, including allusions to blowing up a butane cylinder, causing considerable alarm among the residents of the neighbourhood.
The situation escalated as he began hurling various objects from the house, resulting in damage to several cars parked on the street, although fortunately, no physical injuries were reported.
As the evening progressed, the Guardia Civil eventually intervened and successfully arrested the man at around 11pm, bringing this distressing episode to a close.
Meanwhile, also in San Javier, the Guardia Civil are looking for a group of hooded men who broke into a house and assaulted and robbed four people at gunpoint while they were playing cards.
This incident took place on August 12 on Calle Cozumel in Santiago de La Ribera. According to official reports, at least five men stormed into the house brandishing guns and badly beat the poker players while demanding money from them.
They eventually made off with around 3,000 euros in cash, mobile phones, house keys and the keys to two vehicles. The thieves fled the scene of the crime in one of the stolen cars, a high-end Mercedes AMG C63.
