British expat arrested for arson in Javea

A British expat has been arrested in the Alicante town of Javea on four arson charges for deliberately setting fire to public rubbish containers and vehicles back on August 8.

CCTV footage shows that the suspect waited until the quiet hours of the early morning to pour petrol on 13 bins all over the municipality before setting them alight. The damage to the rubbish containers has been estimated at 19,000 euros and three privately-owned cars parked close to the litter bins also went up in flames.

After examining the camera images and taking statements from several witnesses, investigators were led to a vehicle belonging to a 43-year-old British citizen who has a criminal record.

A search of the car on September 13 revealed a jerrycan containing traces of petrol and several lighters and boxes of matches. The expat was immediately arrested and placed at the disposal of the Judicial District of Denia, but he has since been released on bail pending further investigation.

Officers are currently trying to determine the man’s motives for setting the fires and establish if there is any connection with similar incidents reported in nearby Costa Blanca towns.
